Hey all I just traded for a Winchester model 42 from some kid who inherited it from his grandfather. It is serial 40674, I believe 1940. I have included pictures, even though they may not be the best. Just curious to get some info on the gun, I am unsure what the grades are and such. What is the benefit, if any, of a modified choke as opposed to the full choke?

Your Model 42 was manufactured in August of 1939. It is a plain Field grade gun. The MOD choke is a better option for the .410 bore, as it allows the narrow shot column to open up (spread) faster than a FULL choke does. In the condition shown in the pictures you posted, it is worth approximately $750.
