John,
It is in remarkably good condition because it isn't all that old. When they start getting up toward 100 they can look real poor if a number of people haven't taken good care of them.
Post 1964 Winchesters suffer a bit in value due to changes in that year to the manufacturing process that resulted in a somewhat poorer quality rifle being produced. Or so they say. And if you look close it is true. Also, as I mentioned, that there are just so darn many out there. Model 94 questions are probably at the top of the list on the forum.
From the sounds of it your grandchild will end up with 'Grandpa's Gun' and hopefully cherish it for the rest of his/her life and pass it on to their children. I truly believe tha Grandfathers, old guns, and grandchildren are just a few of the magical things in this world. I know they were for me. My grandfathers have been gone a long time but I can remember like it was yesterday the day that one one my grandfathers and I went duck hunting. It turned out to be his last time ever. That is special day for any young man. It was 35 years ago now.
Enjoy your rifle and your grandchildren.
They both are priceless.
