I have a winchester 1894 32-40 fancy sporting rifle s/n 444318, walnut stock, cresent butt plate. The barrel starts as an octagon barrel but turns into a round barrel at the end of the front stock grip. It has the rear flip sight and is lever action. Do you know what it might be worth?

Amtrach,

The rifle was manufactured in 1908. By your description of it being a fancy sporting rifle I will assume it is a "deluxe" with checkered stock and fore end and a pistol grip. What is the length of the magazine relative to the barrel? It has a tang peep but does it have a rear barrel sight or is there a blank in the cut out on the barrel. The .32-40 caliber configuration made up 11% of the 1894 production prior to 1907 and probably less than 110,000 were made in that caliber before it was discontinued in 1938. Thus it is the least produced of the 5 calibers for that rifle. Some may see that as plus or minus. If you could answer these questions and give some idea of the bluing coverage and wood condition then an estimate would be more accurate. Right now.... someplace between $2000 and $12,000. I just saw one sell for over $13,000 at auction but it was almost perfect.

2Bit,
To answer your questions, The barrel is 26" long and the magazine extends the same length of the barrel. There is also a little lever type mechanism at the end of the magazine. I am not sure what that is for? Yes, it does have the rear barrel sight. The condition of the wood is in good to very good shape. There are a few minor dent impressions in the wood on the front grip but the wood is not chipped. The back stock has no dents or chips and the finish is in very good shape. The bluing is in very good condition and the gun will fire.

Amtrach,

The 26" barrel is the standard length for the Model 1894. The "little lever" on the end of the magazine tells me it is a take down version of the rifle. This means that the barrel and magazine could be "easily" taken apart from the receiver so that the rifle could be transported more easily. The receiver should look like the photo below. Still need to know if the wood is checkered and if it is pistol gripped or not

2bit,
Sorry,
Yes, it is pistol gripped and the front grip and rear stock are checkered. It also has the rear flip sight on the pistol grip.

Amtrach,
I have seen your replies. Your rifle then should look very similar to the photo I posted in this thread earlier. I sent you a PM just about 30 minutes ago.
