I inherited the rifle. Its in working order of course I don't plan to use it other than let someone shoot it just so they can have the experience. I'm primarily trying to figure out its age. Knowig an approximate value may help in insuring it also.

Dummy me I forgot to include the details.

Serial number 444XXX. I would guess condition "good". Stock and forearm are a dark walnut I would have to believe original. As there is some wear and minor marks in the wood. None go beyond the finsish and there are no cracks. The brrl does have a small 1/4 by 1/8 rust spot approx 10 inches down the bore end. Metal finish is brownish with wear around the bore and along the edges of the reciever. Again nothing major. When I recieved the gun it was missing the rearward backstrap screw. I replaced it with a brass one as near to original as I could find (according to the gunsmith I went to). Twenty inch octogon brrl. Sights are blade front and hieght adjustable rear. All is tight. The action is not loose and not to tight. Its nice easier than my 30-30 but not as bad as the old .357 Rossi lever gun. Its nice.

As the stories are handed down from generation to the next. The rifle was bought by my Great-great grandfather near the turn of the century in either Alabama or Mississppi during his migration to Texas after landing in the States from Ireland.

This is my only firearm over 30 years old so I am a novice I guess.

hi rob,
your 92 was manufactured in 1908, value should be in the 1500+ range but a rifle of this age and condition would be best having a hands-on appraisal done if for no other reason insurance purposes. great rifle. JMHO

Thanks. I found the dates on serials for 1894s and it showed 1908 for year of manufacture too. Did they run 92s and 94s concurrent. I'm just guessing the 94s were improved 92s....if so why did they keep making the 92s for so long?
