Kobus,

Since you say you have to make an offer I hope you have a nice healthy check book! This wasthe big frame brother to the Model 1873 and only 63,871 of them were made. The relatively low production had kept the prices quite healthy. This is a rifle where even in a 60% condition the valus is high because there just aren't many around. The express leaf sights is a plus also since it is a special order item. You didn't mention but I'll asume it is an octagon barrel rifle with a crescent butt. Is the stock a pistol grip and checkered by chance? Any chance the receiver was case colored and lost all if its color and is thus now a silvery grey color? It would look like a blued receiver with all the bluing gone. Can you give me a serial number?

Please take a moment and answer these questions and get back to me. I will be glad to give you an accurate number. If you could send a few photos that would be nice. Right now I would venture an honest offer would be around $8000! Give me some more info and I'll refine it.

How's that check book feeling? Let me know if you decide to pass on it. I would like a chance to possibly buy it but would need more info. The photo is one that a friend of mine owns.

Thanks

2bit,

Thankyou for your help so far. It is an octagon barrel, straight stock, no pistol grip, serial no. 6385. Cannot tell about the colour case hardening. Will have to go and get another look at the rifle and also try and take a photo or two.

Your rifle dates back to 1878, the second year of production. Well you got rid of an expensive pistol grip deluxe stock. That saved you at least a thousand. You will want to ask the owner if he has a Cody Letter for the rifle. The Cody Firearms Museum has the original hand written production ledgers for these rifles. Each serial number can be researched and the original configuration discovered. The sights should be original to pay a premium for. They WILL be noted if they were. Sometimes they were added. But that does not bring the money as verifiable originals. Below is a partial image of a Cody letter.

Let me know when you get more info.

Without seeing a photo or two I can't tell you. But you sound pretty excited about it. Just so long as it doesn't look like the rifle in this post you probably did alright.

Hallo 2Bit (and everybody else)

Sorry, I was a week away from my computer so that was the cause of the silence. I took some photo's of the rifle in a vault with bad light, so they are not so good. I am not sure how to attach them but will give it a try. Let me know if you can open it.
I didnot mention the interesting "flip up" frontsight. I think the original blueing is better than I thought, maybe 70 -75 % but the stock is dry, no cracks, no finish (varnish). And a set trigger.

Kobus.

Ps. having trouble of hooking a photo on. please help.

Kobus,

I decided to do this noew so that I do not forget again. From the photos you posted it looks like you did very well. There is an identical rifle for sale in town here for $15,000!! But it is over priced by abour $5000. So you still did well. The stock and fore end look a touch funny. Maybe it's just the poor shape of the finish and the weird color of the lighting. The front sight is a Beeches globe sight. That sight and the seven leaf espress rear sight were deffinitely special order items for the rifle.

The bottom of the stock at the butt plate is bent a touch. And I can not tell anything about the barrel bluing. What kind of shape is the bore in?

If you could find somebody to take some good detailed photos and email them to me I can go over it with a fine comb. But it looks like you did quite well indeed. I would like to really look closely to be sure.

Congrats
