hi caistronman,
i'm confussed with the serial number. the 6b threw me off, winchester never used letters in the s'n's, if the s/n is 48577, your fathers rifle was manufactured in 1880, value would require a hands-on appraisel for insurance, the value could be considerable and i'ld hate to guess site unseen.

Caistronman,
I know this is a nold post but Ithought I should reply. My bet is that the serial number is 485776. The production would be from 1895. On the Model 1873 the letter A and B do often follow the serial number and after much research have not been correlated to any specific cause. Certainly not a factory refurbish. I'll take your word about it being perfect. If, in fact it is still nice and blue with no worn off spots and not cracked wood that baby is in the $6000 to $7500 range. There are lots of special order options which were available that could drive the price higher. Please either post photos or send me a private message and I will give you more info
Hope to hear,
