I have noticed that a couple of retailers are selling the Steyr M-series semi-auto's at greatly reduced prices. (M40 for $239) Does anyone know why? They don't appear to be discontinued, and from everything I read, they appear to be very well-made handguns.

Thanks,

Can you tell me where? And do they have any in .357 SIG? If it's anywhere close to TX, I'm gonna get a pair. Those trapezoidal sights are SWEET!

I believe the reason for such discounts with the Steyr M series pistols is due to their current lack of a US distributor. I also believe their factory sustained flood damage during the wide-spread floods in central europe last year. Also, I believe I heard somewhere that their firearms factory was bought by a german auto maker. These things combined with a lack of after-market parts and accessories, and the fact that this pistol must compete with the extremely successful Glock pistols has contributed to less than stellar sales in the North American market. And that's really unfortunate, the Steyr M series are very well made, reliable, accurate, and innovative handguns. I have owned a Steyr M9 for a little less than a year. I've put more than 2500 rounds thru mine without a single problem. I sincerely believe that had the 'M' series been around in the early to mid 80's it would currently be holding Glocks market-share of the polymer pistol industry. The 1911sight website has an informative review of the Steyr

and Steyr's website is www.smg.steyr.com. And no I don't work for Steyr.

I'm looking at the Steyr catalog right now. It's 289 not 239.

Just to keep facts correct, the high-cap magazines for the Steyrs are for LE only. Thats LAW ENFORCEMENT, just in case you don't know. I have one of the Steyr M9s and it is a great gun. I gave it to my wife at the range the only way she will touch a semi, cocked and locked, and she did 10 for 10 head shots at 25 yards. Better than I am with a pistol and I worry alot less because of it. I paid $500 for mine back before they went on sale and I'm not sorry. It's my carry gun even with 10 round mags.
