hello,,kim your correct ,,theres no difference as long as the 06 is there ,,the 30-40 krag was known as the 30US untill the 30-06 came along,,,,i beleive the 30-06 translates into 30 cal and 1906 as the year introduced,, thus 30-06,,if memory serves me correct ,,,but when ya hit the 50 mark sometimes ya forget things ,,,,

Old ammunition is marked in various ways with variations of government being one. .30 U.S. being another.

In the 1800s the first number was a caliber and the second the powder charge. Sometimes they'd include the bullet weight as a third number: .45-70-500 would be .45 caliber, 70 grains of powder, 500 grain bullet.

With the .30-40 Krag that held true. ,30 caliber and 40 grains of smokeless powder.

That was replaced by the M-1903 rifle and the .30-03 cartridge. The '03 designating the year.

When the Germans developed spitzer bullets the US ordnance department copied them and modified the .30-03 to .30-06 so, yes, the '06 is the year.

Commercial companies normally marked the cartridges with "US" or "GVMT" or such. Military cartridges didn't have caliber markings - just maker and year.
