I like to use brake cleaner (from the auto parts store) on external parts followed by a wipe down with Rigg Grease (and a Rigg Rag). Moving parts are lubed with Remington Gun Oil because the brake cleaner is going to remove every vestige of oil.

Use Lead-Away cloth on any stubborn spots. Even the black, burned in stuff around a revolver cylinder gap will wipe off like nail polish using acetone. It will not harm stainless guns finish at all. It will remove blueing on carbon steel guns but other wise if it is cleaned off after use and the gun is kept in good shape it will do no harm to any of your guns. I have yet to see a leaded up barrel that was not spotless and shining after a 1' x 1' piece of lead-away cloth on a cleaning rod is used. It literally wipes it away as easy as it could possibly be. I recently discovered this stuff after a recommendation on this group and before that I was scrubbing my ass off and not doing my guns any good either. Now it is a non-issue and cleaning is a breeze.
