The best place to start is a 22 single shot rifle.

Why not take a shooting course that allows you to try as many models / types as possible.

Informed decisions are easier.

Being female has very little to do with what kind of handgun is right for you. The larger question is how much skill at arms do you possess? A few weeks after I turned 21, I bought my first handgun. I have been shooting since I was a child. BB gun at 7, Pellet gun at 16, and then a Shotgun and Center fire rifle at 19. Still the handgun I chose as my first was a single action in .22 lr/mag. I wanted something I could afford to get lots of practice with plus use as a camp gun when going hunting or back packing. I suppose my years of shooting the air and powder rifles had taught me that you need to hit what you shoot at. Once I got proficient with the .22, my next handgun was a single action in .41 mag. Since I knew how to aim and release the trigger, the challenge of the big bore was to control the flinch reflex. You did not say whether or not you enjoy the shooting sports or how much if any shooting skill you possess. Assuming you are starting from zip, learn gun safety and to hit what you aim at. I recommend a .22lr. The savings in ammo alone will pay for the gun. Ruger makes a nice single 6. Then I would get a nice double action revolver in .357. Its for the car or the house so get one with some weight to it to help with controlling recoil and to steady your aim. No light weight pocket gun. Something made of Stainless Steel and with a 3 to 5 inch barrel. Then practice with it until you can make good hits at what you aim at. The .38 special round makes good training loads and shoots fine in a .357. For defense load it with 125 gn JHPs and you will have a system which will be very effective at stopping a felon if you do your part. You should also familiarize yourself with your Governments opinion concerning your right to keep and bear arms as many jurisdictions are in conflict with the U.S. Constitution. Especially being armed while driving your car on public roads.

This is a pretty classic problem. I'd go for something like a .38SPL with a 4 1/2' bbl, which is reliable, easy to learn to shoot, effective at the ranges you would use it, modest recoil, etc.

However, to learn to shoot well, you really need to shoot a LOT/practice, so this is the argument for getting some sort of .22LR handgun and using it for practice to get the basic skills down pat.

Also, as good NRA course in gun handling is a must, if you haven't shot much before. This will deal with safe gun handling, self-defense issues, etc., etc. Also, if your state allows/requires it, get a carry permit to avoid legal hassles. You didn't say where you live, so you might want to check the NRA web site for information, or call your local Sherriff's office, or whoever deals with such issue.

Also, a membership at your local gun club is usually cheap enough, so this give you range access, and a pool of knowledgeable people to draw on. Your local gun store can also be helpful along these line.

Check out one of those Taurus 2 inch barrel snubby revolvers, Forgot the model number. My friend bought one some years ago, we went to an indoor range and had no problem placing all the shots in the head area of a silhouete target at 10 feet. Good enough for self defense work. Semi-autos are too complex . If you don't shoot all the time a revolver is easier to use. You don't have to worry about racking the slide, or de-cocking the hammer, or thumbing off the safety. Remember, in an emergency you won't have time to think, and when you produce a gun into a situation, the bad guy may shoot to preserve his own life, so once you show a gun be prepared to shoot fast, so no time to ponder things and think about how to operate your gun
