- It will not be a first handgun or firearm; experienced shooter - Meant primarily for self-defense, then pleasure/compatenacy shooting at a range (about 100 rounds each session) at least once a month, and hopefully some IDPA use/skill enhancement - Any higher-power, self-defense oriented autopistol caliber (ex. 40 S&W, 357SIG, 45ACP) is a player - Size is not unimportant, but the gun is not meant to be a concealed carry weapon - Absolute, stone-cold reliability every shot (once broke in) and upper tier quality are a must - Accuracy, shot consistency and a smooth trigger are next important - After sale manufactuerer support is next important - Aftermarket support availability (night sights, mags, gunsmith availability, etc) is next important - It costs under $650 new - It holds at least 9+1 rounds of ammunition

Have fun with this

Browning Hi-Power. Good price on used ones, and you can still find 13 round magazines. Mine (a '67 commerical model) is dead bang reliable. I did have a smith remove the magazine safety, which greatly improves the trigger pull. Mine came with a nice Micro rear sight and red insert front, but I don't think they were original.

Your milage will vary....

I'd say the Browning Hi-Power. Believe it is available in .40 or .357 Sig. You'll want to remove the magazine safety to improve the trigger pull. I use a 9 mm version for IDPA and love it.

I would say that several choices are available:

Beretta 96 series (.40 S&W) Glocks (choose a Caliber and size) Sig (great guns and again choose a Caliber and size) HK USP ( ditto above)

These are all great guns with a good reputation for reliability and service. I have owned and carried all of them at one time or another. Gunsmithing is no problem with any of these guns and factory service is also available.
