I am thinking about traveling Alaska in a SUV.
I therefore think a weapon would be a good
idea. I understand a .388 is the weapon of
choice. It is really that much better than a
30-06 or a 300?

Buster,

I would suggest looking at a ammunition makers website like Winchester or Hornady and seeing what differences there are in the ballistics of the bullets. Then make a choice. And remember it's not all about the bullet it's about can you put the bullet where it needs to be. I have killed lots of big hogs with a .22-250 and 55 grain varmint loads. Not your typical setup but I have never had to go look for a pig. Also I have been to Alaska numerous times and been within 100 feet of many bears with only a flyrod in my hand. Never felt like I needed a rifle.
Also, before you go there are huge areas of Alaska that are National park lands where firearms can not be possessed. You might also check a road map of Alska. There are surprisingly few roads compared to what you are used to. Hardly any paved.

Good luck

I shoot a 300 Win Mag and wouldn't take anything else. Not only does the 300 have plenty of know down power but it is quite possibly the most versatile weapon on the market. I have 9 different loads for my rifle using 9 different bullet weights and 5 different powders. I am able to hunt anything from coyotes to water buffalo with it. And I'm told it would be effective on elephant, with the proper bullet.

All in all though, I would have to agree that proper bullet placement is essential. You could shoot a 458 Winchester and still not bring a deer down if the shot was misplaced.
