I have a Wards Western Field #46 .22 bolt action rifle that I believe was actually made by Mossberg as a private label variant of their Model 42. My Dad bought the gun new and I'm guessing it was around 1932-1935. Do these have any value? It's in good condition, having been refinished and reblued. Mechanically, there are no problems and it does have the receiver mounted peep sight. Where would I find the serial number on the rifle?

nice rifle and no its not worth much money. store brands bring about 25% less than a mossberg branded one would for one that nice you might get 125.00 and yes its a model 42. made for wards catalog sales. back when you could mail order guns.

Model 42 was manufactured from 1935 to 1937 and
sold by Monkey Wards with several different model numbers
46, 46A, 46B, 45, 45B and 499A

No serial number before 1969 on Mossberg rifles.

Price of $125 is in the ball park...

Would be worth a little more, the #3 rear peep sight could be worth $75 to $100 alone, but is missing several originial parts..

Still a nice little rifle... enjoy it..

I have located a set of original sling swivels for this rifle. What type of sling would have been used originally: web? leather?

I would imagine a cloth/web sling, don't see many Mossies that old (75 years +) Newer models (still 60 years old) came with cloth/web slings.
