I was going trough my dads house after he passed away and found a 22 rifle, you have to excuse me for i know nothing about firarms, It is a wards western field and that is stamped on the left side also has 22 short long or long rife and the only number i could find on it was a number 4 with a circle around it, could anybody tell me how old or the value of this family rifle?

hello,,It's kinda hard to tell who originally made the rifle for wards ,,i'm guessing mabey it's a model 40 which was made by marlin and sold by wards with there trade name Western Feild,,but tis is jus a guess from your description ,,if this is what it is it should be a single shot bolt action rifle ,,they were made from 1941-1977,,Value for it or just about any western feild 22 rifle would only be around 100-150,,so theres proably more sentimental value than collectors value..but they shoot and are a good economical 22's for starting kids out with or as a house or garden rifle for pesky varmits..
