Hi!,
I'm a newbie yo this forum who has been out of the gun hobbie for probably 20+ years. I have inherited my fathers (and before that my grandfathers)Winchester Model 94 Rifle (not carbine) 38-55 Winchester and Ballard, takedown with a octagon barrel, curved butt plate with a serial # of 28,xxx. The barrel is little dark (probably due to it being a black powder load) with wear in the normal places, loading port, etc. Overall condition is probably NRA good to very good (Do they they still do that or am I showing my age?). I have 2 questions and I was hoping could be answered. How old is this gun? Am I correct in thinking that it was manufactured in 1894 or 1895? Finally I want to include it on my homeowners policy and I was hoping I could an insurance value.
Thanks.

Quickarl,

Why do you refer to the rifle as Winchester and Ballard?
That part of your question has me confused.

According to most data your gun was made in 1895. So a second year of production. Percentage ranking of condition is more typically used today but NRA is still seen. Without a few photos, or a lot of them, I will assume it would be about an 80% rifle and that it would be valued around $3750. The fact that it is a takedown and the .38-55 caliber adds bonus dollars.

Is there any chance that there is the screw located just to the rear of the loading gate as in the photo below? If so it would be a "First Model" of the 1894 and worth even more.

Sorry if this reply seems very tardy. I never saw it earlier but did not want to let it slip past again.
