Thanks...I am interested in replacing it with a DA...I may be acting on a misconception, but the idea of carriying it cocked and locked, with concern for what might happen to the safety latch when removing it from pocket, or holster, carrier, has always bothered me...if I'm unnecessarily concerned please advise me...if you can recommend some alternative (I've looked at KelTec, but don't like the trigger guard to front of trigger clearance) your opinion would be appreciated.

hello again,,as for your question alot of things come to mind ,,cal..and hand size are also important things to concider,,i hvae big hands and small frame compacts just don't feel good in my hand ,,i'd check a good sporting goods store with a selection of sa/da and da only handguns and see what feels good to ya,,i like the sa/da pistols personally ,,your mustang is 380 ..is that what your looking to replace it with? if so your a little limited ,,i like the bersa thunderer in 380 ,,a really nice compact carry 380 in blue or stainless d/a with decocker,,shoots good and feels good in your hand and the price won't hurt your wallet.. very dependably and finish is very good,,i owned a kel-tec 9mm and didn't like the feel or how it shot..but it's a whatever your comfortable with,,i'd even concider a airweight tarus or smith in 38,,my bro in law carries a tarus everyday in his pants pocket and he really likes it,stopping power and lightweight sa or da,,and ya don't seldom jam a revolver,,but sometimes semis are tempermental with types of ammo,,,so alot of things to concider when ya buy the next one..but most of all it's gotta feel good and fit your hand ,,

The guy's nuts! Grab'm!

Sorry, BigCurt, but you and I differ in places.

Colt Mustangs, very popular in the mid-late '90s, were discontinued around '97 when anti-gun pressures coerced Colt into leaving the civilian market and supplying law enforcement and military only. Mustangs are now collector's items. The cheapest you should let yours go (in decent condition) is around $600 minimum, no matter the model; maybe more, depending.

Properly holstered, either concealed or open carried, any 1911-style pistol from a decent manufacturer can be carried safely, and they are, by thousands of knowledgeable shooters every day.

If you want to carry this gun, increase your comfort level with practice, practice, practice. Decide on what mode of carry you want (open, concealed), then decide where/how you want to carry (strong-side hip, small-of-the-back, crossdraw, etc.). Then get a decent holster from a good company. Buy yourself some snap caps or dummy rounds, and practice holstering and drawing and manipulating the safety and dry firing until you make every move automatically. Get coaching from someone who knows how to carry cocked-and-locked, preferably a law-enforcement or instructor type. After hundreds of repetitions holstering and drawing, wiping and setting the safety, etc., you will come to find that the safety goes where you put it, and stays there until you move it, as long as you are doing what you're supposed to. Cocked-and-locked carry requires an intimate knowledge of your SA pistol, and if you're not willing to put in the effort, then abandoning that type of carry is probably a good idea.

And IMHO, I wouldn't carry a collector's item on a daily basis, anyway. For carry, you want a gun that's as common as fleas on a dog. Preserve your collector's pieces.

I appreciate the advice...FWIW, I stopped carrying the Mustang and got an LCR, with laser sights...very pleased with it and can keep the Colt in the gunsafe between trips to the range.
