Hello - I am looking for a value info on this Springfield Armory, Model 1898 in 30-40 Krag, ser# 394xxx. Has 1242 stamped into right side of stock back by the butt and three symbols with 1901 in a square stamp on the left of stock above the trigger.

Appears all original, never been "sporterized" or otherwise modified that I know of. I've had it for 30 yrs personally [used to hunt deer with it], was in my family [Dad's] for at least 20 years prior to that.

Would appreciate any insight on going price and if it looks to be authentic/original.

hello,,your krag at some time has been cut down,,the serial number is too high for an 1898 carbine ,,i've seen many many krag rifles cut down and turned into carbine lenght rifles ,,it looks good but the nose in front of the front band is too short also,,it's sometimes very hard to tell a sporter from an original carbine
sometimes even the front site looks correct,,but the serial is the give away,,yours is convincing and a nice job but just not perfect ,,i'd estimate it would bring 300-400 for someone looking for a sporter /carbine lookalike,,mabey even a little more in the right situation or mabey online auction..

That's cool - didn't have high hopes or anything, was curious if this was something "too valuable" to be maybe target shooting with and so forth.

The real "value" for me is every time I pick it up remembering that my Dad gave it to me, the good times we had hunting together - and that is priceless.

Sincere thanks for the time you spend on this board giving free advice and great web site you have here !

hey chris ,,i've had alot of questions on the old carbine lookalike guns and found some other info out on them that may include yours into it,,from research i've done since i answered your post it seems the DCM or Department of Civlian Marksmanship had a number of krag rifles converted to carbine lenght,,these are starting to be concidered to be true krag conversions and collectors are starting to notice them ,,values would be 500-650 0n some of these models ,,and yours could very well fall into this catagory,,just thought ya might want to know..

My husband has a Model 1898 30-40 Krag (U.S. Springfield) serial # 208473, it has no markings on the stock we haven't been able to find out anything about it and have no idea of it's value? Can you tell us anything?

Would need one good full length picture to tell much.
