I am trying to value out a P38 lugar from 1942. It is my understanding that this gun is just a P38 because a lugar is a different gun. The gun has the swatzika and eagle stamp on the gun. The gun has not been shot since 1942. Under the blue book values it is may understanding that it is valued at $1800 plus an additional 30% for the stamp. Making the gun worth $2340. The gun also has the original holster with the stamp on it also. The owner is trying to state the gun with holster is worth $6000. I could only find the value at $2340 plus and additional $700 for the holster. Please the me know if you believe this gun with holster in excellent condition may be worth $3040 or if there is anyone else that may help.

BYF-42 is the last year made if that is what it is.
Police markings are good if it has them.
Original black widow grips are nice with matching aluminum base magazine if it has it.
$700. is way high on holster (black or brown) all were
mostly black unless they were for Luft.

i'm curious ,,what makes you think it's a byf 42 p-38? the p-38's were made thru 45 and AC codes are thru 45 and byf is thru 44,,the germans made a AC42 and a BYF42,,the police issued codes were byf43,byf44, ac43,ac44 and svw 45 and are more valuable than the military pistols because of limited production numbers ,,if you or the seller are dateing it by the code we would need to know what letter code it has,,eg ac or byf,if it's a ac42 then value for the pistol in excellent condition is 1300 according to the standard cataloge of military firearms add another 125-250 for a original holster mabey a little more for a matching holster,,and price should be around 2000 tops and unless with capture papers from a known general no way worth 6000,,the byf code 42 pistol is worth a little more and book value in excellent condition is set at 2200and again the same figures for a holster,,so being generous 2500 would be a fair value..mabey i'm missing something here but i think thats why this guy still has it,,it's way overpriced!imo,,but some people beleive that since it was picked up on a battle feild it's makes it worth a fortune,,but it comes down to real world prices and what you want and what you get are two sides of a coin.. when giving prices from books,,they are ment to be used as GUIDES AND RANGES not written in stone for every gun!i really think if you really want a p-38 to look around some more and i'm sure you will find one that has as much provinance for less money,,try gunbroker.com,,gunsamerica,,or auctionarms and see what you might find there ,,but as they say ..it's your money and i can't or won't tell ya how to spend it!

I have a few concerns about the post. Is it a P-38 or a P-08 luger.
If it is a P-38, is it a AC (Walther) or a BYF
(Mauser).
There is a difference in price for that year
if it is a P-38.

This is just my opinion, but if you know nothing about lugers, you should not be looking at anything over $1000.

Over $1000 you are getting into the collector price range, yet you are not a collector.

Its like getting on the back of a bull but not being a bull rider...
