I have an Winchester Model 1892 in caliber .44-40 (.44WCF). It is the Standard variation of the Sporting Rifle witha 24 inch octagonal barrel. The serial number is 503919 which I believe puts it at a 1909 date of manufacture. It is in what I would consider excellent condition. However, when it was given to me 15 years ago I did not realize what I had. It had a little rust on the barrel due to how it was stored. I had an old time professional gunsmith re-blue it and refinish the stock. It was re-blued using the rust blue procedure which I was told was how the rifle was originally blued. What is the approximate value of the rifle? Thank you.

your winchester was indeed made in 1909 and the reblueing and refinishing may hurt the price some ,,but as long as the gunsmith knew what he was doing and didn't overbuff it take away any of the crispness of the markings it shouldn't hurt the values much for such a collectable firearm,,most of the time gunsmithe make them look to new and a collector can see it as soon as he picks it up ,,a 100 yr old rifle should look like a 100 yr old rifle so i always recommend for collector purposes to not refinish just clean up,,that said your 92 still should be worth around 1000 depending upon the extent of refinishing and how good of job was done ,,mabey higher or lower depending on the collector that has intrest in it,,but hey it's your rifle and you can enjoy it anyway ya want ..

Thanks for your response. I'm looking to sell it, to get some cash to buy a new hunting rifle, and was trying to get a handle on it's value. My neighbor "collects" Winchesters, he has 2-1892s and an 1873 and I'm trying to set a price. Based on what I've seen on various web sites and what you have indicated I think $1000.00 is a good starting point.

If I had to do it over I would have left it as I received it but my plaans were to use it and I wanted to clean it up. The gun was refinished beautiflly and I hate to part with it but I don't shoot it much and I really want a new hunting rifle.
