So I have a super old Pistol that my Great Great Grandfater passed down to me. he was the sheriff of Clallam County Wa back in 1936-1946. while he was in office he got this gun off a crime scene.

I am just wondering what it is worth. it's serial number is 8435

If anyone can help me I would be interested in the best way to find out it's born on date, and possibly it's value.

thanks Doc

Alot of info is needed on your gun. Is it an open top? what cal? What condition? If you could post a pic it would help alot. There are a few people at this site that really know their guns. I'll dig up what I can on the info that you've given.

hi engel,
date of manufacture might be difficult but if what you have is the original open top colt 1872 in unaltered condition the value should start at $2500. as shooter stated more info would help such as type grips any other markings, caliber, etc. having a professional appraisel for insurance purposes would be in order. Ok sorry I did not give you much info. It is a 44-40 from what my grandfather says he had it restored in 1960, but it has not been fired. here are the pictures. What what I can find is a that says a Colt in the 8,000 serial number range was made in 1882.

here are couple of pictures.

I can't hazzard a guess on this one. If it's been restored some value could have been taken away. It's a beutiful pistol. None of my old books show anything like it. Those bisley grips are either factory custom or after market. You should spend the money and get it appraised. It would be money VERY well spent. You're sitting on something really special.
