I certainly didn’t. As it turns out his creator was an American named Luger. Luger took the main points of criticism that were herd regarding the C-93 pistol, a pistol created by the German born Hugo Borchardt that arrived America when he was 16 and fixed them to create the Luger.
Even after all the changes the Luger lost the American army contact for the Colt 1911 and ended up with the German army.

The Luger was a development of Hugo Borchardt’s pistol. Borchardt was the main designer for the Sharps company before it folded. Nice picture of a Borchardt at wikipedia:
