Looking for the value of a Colt .22 FIRST SERIES, Pre-Woodsman, with medium barrel. Serial number (48,702). Pistol is in "fair" condition overall, but mechanically perfect. Minor rust has been carefully removed with 0000 steel wool and penetrating oil.

Even a ballpark value would help .

Thanks for being here,

hello your pre woodsman would be worth between 300fair-600 good at auction or to a colt collector looking to fill a void in his collection,,i beleive you have the second variation with the heavier barrel than the first variation,,after serial number 31000 the barrel contour was changed,,only 54000 made ,,

Hi Bigcurt,

You're right about the series. My Colt is the "Medium Barrel" with a smaller stepdown and taper to .525 inches. With serial numbers from 31,000 to 54,000, only about 23,000 of this profile were made.

Long ago, that is to say back in 1947, I bought one of the very first Colt Woodsman - Sports Model. Since Colt only made 250 of them that first production year, mine was surely onen of those 250. As a kid, I had no idea what I really had (bought it new in the box), and traded it for a 4-gauge brass flare pistol.

Ah, well . . . . . that wasn't the only poor gun deal I've made in my lifetime.

Thanks for the note and for the help.

Mort
