I just bought a used Taurus 85S revolver. It's in good shape except I see a scratch line that goes around most of the cylinder. Is this a problem and what causes this? I've never seen this on another revolver. Thanks.

the fine line you see is caused by the 'hand' (cylinder locking latch) Taurus and S&W share this, its normal and not a problem Fred

Not a problem except for looks. It is caused by idiots who like to spin the cylinder.

This is typically the line caused by the pawl at the bottom of the frame. This pawl engages the slots in the cylinder to align the cylinder to the bore. Every revolver that has been fired more than a few dozen times will have this line as the two metal surfaces touch as they move and the finish is worn away, or in the case of stainless, polished.

This line is made my the cylinder lock as the cylinder turns between shots. It happens on every revolver and is not a problem. Look at some other used revolvers and you will see the same line.

Bob, if you don't know the answer, you should refrain from answering.

Well, the cylinder does have to spin in order to fire the rounds. Does that make all revolver shooters idiots?

Bob's halfway right about the idiot terminology with revolvers. Here I am closing the cylinder or loading gate on a cylinder indentation not to get that unsightly ping and while nothing bugs me more then seeing some fool spinning an open cylinder at full rev. then slamming it shut by flicking their wrist.Pure ignorants taught by Hollywood movies and learned by 'yes' idiots...

My gut feeling tells me that most revolver owners close the cylinder and then rotate it to lock up. Causes scoring from the pawl, but since it's comestic only, idiots they're not (at least in my book).

Also, in some revolvers (my Ruger SP101 for example), the pawl raises while the cylinder is still rotating to lockup. Can't do anything about scoring in these cases.
