Hi everybody , please forgive me for jumping straight in with questions but this one has been bugging me for a long time.Ive read how to open a lemon squeezer but it isnt opening.
How can i be sure which model this one is ?
Where will i find a serial number in order to date it ?
How can i be sure which calibre it is other than buying the wrong shells?I think it might be a .32.I also think it might be the 1st model but i cant be sure.
Can anybody help me out ?Thanks

Hi Kim , thank you.I did have a look at that forum but felt a little intimidated by talk of little but newer guns which i dont have.Ive inherited this one with a few others , all of them on the old side.
Ive figured them all out but this one.Its extremely frustrating as i think i have the correct instructions to open it which seems simple enough.Try as i might it wont open and i dont want to damage the inner workings by forcing it although its appearing like thats what it needs.

Ive read how others have dated and identified the model they have by using the serial number , where is it ? Haha i cant find anything which is very strange as all other American made guns have various markings in various prominent places. All this has is the S&W embossed into the metal either side.

Value wise ive seen anything from $100 to $1750.00 , they cant all be accurate estimates.

Thank you for advice , ill keep checking back and keep looking although ive spent many a night searching the net for somebody who knows this model , thanks again.

hi james,
have you checked under the grips to see if the s/n is there? check out these, it seems to match yours, i'm still checking around,

Kim

Serial numbers on S&W New Departures, if it says new adventures it's a foreign copy, are found on the bottom of the butt, back of the cylinder, bottom of the barrel latch and between the ears of the rear of the barrel where the latch closes over the barrel. If you take the grips off the serial number of the gun should be either etched or stamped on the inside of one or both of the grip handles.

Hi Kim , your a star so you are , you know i had thought about under the grips , its about the only place i hadnt looked.Im having trouble finding a driver small enough and vaguely nervous of stripping out the thread.
I did post a query on the forum you suggested , thank you , im pretty sure when i het that screw out and can find a serial number ill know exactly which model it is.Im almost confident it has to be a 1st model as ive seen plenty of others identified as 2nd or 3rd editions , they dont look like this one though.
Theres only one thing raising a red flag in that direction is the what appears to be original holster , it has a stamp in the leather which part of says 1907.

This doesnt look like the New Departures made in 1907 , im wondering if the holster came later..unlikely perhaps..i dont know.
Ill post the serial number as soon as i can safely remove the grips , thank you Kim

Huh ... i was expecting to see it stamped in the metal.Mine doesnt say New Departure or anything but a S&W stamped either side.
I got the grips off ok , like i say i was inspecting the metal and only checked the inside of the grips after rereading your post Kim.
Sure enough there is a number etched on one grips inside.Looks like they used a pin or a scriber of some type , its not what you would call immediately obvious.

It looks to me to say X 1127 , without doubt its X1127 , thoughts ?

Seen the pics Kim , thanks , it says i have to be logged in to see close ups , im not a member so will trust your judgement on which one it is.
