recent sales on gunbroker have completed for $225 to $475 with one gun, unfired, new in box selling for $495.

THe savage 71, Steven's favorite was made in 1971 on the centennial of the first production of the 22 long (not the 22 long rifle which was introduced in 1887.)

There were approx 10,000 produced.

As to number produced, consider this auction http://www.cowanauctions.com/auctions/item.aspx?ItemId=37541 where gun number 02001 was sold for $218. -- note the serial number.

As to your assertion that there were 1000 made, I am relying on John Walter's "Rifles of the World" from which I quote:

M71 Favorite Rifle: 10,000 of these were made in Westfield in 1971, facsimiles of the 19th century single shot Stevens Favorite (q.v.) with an octagonal barren and brass plating on the hammer, the front sight and the underlever. A portrait medallion commemorating Joshua Stevens was set into the straight-wrist butt, a decorative "Stevens Favorite" logo was etched into the receiver side and a short curved-belly forend was fitted beneath the barrel.

That's 10,000 produced. Not 1000.

Also, of course, there's the '72 and '74 variants before you reach the model 30g which is still in production.

As to value, please go to gunbroker and run your own search for recent sales.... The numbers I quoted are quite accurate.

As to the sale referenced above for $9K, either there is something exceptional about that particular gun, a presentation gun, special engraving or something... because the going rate for 71's is under $700.

see for example this auction on auction arms:http://www.gunsamerica.com/970754194/Guns/Rifles/Savage-Rifles/Other/Savage_Model_71_Stevens_Favorite_Commemorative_Single_Shot_Rifle_22_S_L_LR.htm

I stand by my previous value statement based on sales on Gunbroker and auction arms over the last six months, including sales of NEW IN BOX examples.

Citation please.

Sales of NEW IN BOX examples of the '71 over the last six months on Auction Arms and Gunbroker have ALL been under $700.

Can you please link a published source for that price? Was the gun in some other way exceptional?

I just purchased one, without box and accouterments for $299. I thought it was an excellent price (9/2015)

I considered buying one of the originals, but there were numerous "issues" with them, and finding someone to fix an original (although they are excellent wall-hangers) would be very expensive. I decided to get a "new" Model 71 Favorite and I've very happy with it. I've seen them offered for $400 up, but at this date, I don't think there were any takers.
