I have a US Springfield Model 1898 30-40 Bolt action Krag Rifle. It is a US issue. Serial number 117969 with a redfield scope mount. It appears to be in near flawless condition. I'm interested in selling this to a collector. Can anyone tell me how to find the value of this weapon or where I could look on the net for better information on value?

hello ,,i'll tell you the same thing i told another poster ,,the value for old guns that have been altered by mounting a scope goes way down when they have been altered,,without the scope even with a cutdown stock the value is more than with holes drilled and tapped into the receiver,,after the wars alot of old milsurps were sporterized and became sporting rifles and values are for just that ..sporting rifles ,,it is possible to convert them back to original but this model has a hard receiver and if you reblue it it becomes refinished ,,but the holes usually don't retain the same blueing color as the receiver and will most always be noticable,,value as it is is more or less as a parts gun to a collector who would proably use the parts or to a hunter looking for a good truck gun,,that said if it wasn't drilled and tapped for the mount it could have a value of up to 1000-1200+ dpending how nice the rest was but with a scope mount i'd give it a value of around 300-400,,to a krag collector ,,too bad they have really rizen in value in the last 5 years if all original and correct,,

Thank you for your great complete response bigcurt concerning my 30-40. Just yesterday I took this out and fired it in. I was pleased how very smooth the action is and how accrete it fired in Now I can understand why my mom used this rifle for years as a sit and wait on deer hunts. After yesterday this rifle is a keeper.

glad to here it ,,they do have a very smooth action and many guys i know still hunt with them,,i really didn't want to tell you that because it was a deer rifle more than a collectors item the value was low ,,but i try not to give people false hope with values ,,now that your keeping it everytime you take it out you will think how many deer it just may have downed ,,something to tell your kids about the old spanish american war rifle mom used to shoot deer,,congrats on a nice heirloom

I also own a 1899 Krag 30-40 rifle in near perfect condition. I recieved it from my grandfather when he passed away. I don't intend to sell it but I saw the sane rifle in terrible condition at a local pawn shop for $900! I know ine must be worth well over that.

the original krag rifles have rizen in value over the past couple years as is the case with just about all original military weapons that haven't been altered..i've seen nice original examples with price tags of well over 1000 and if you find the right collector looking for a nice one... who knows what he might pay!,,the problem like any other collectable ..is finding that person,,but if properly listed on a good online auction site it's easier than people think and alot of gunshops and pawn shops are taking advantage of the internet auctions these days ,,your post didn't include much detail on your rifle but at a good auction your rifle depending on the condition could easily bring 1000-1500 to the right collector..i will say that sooner or later the collecting market will drop off some ..but it seems theres more and more vintage military and sporting rifles surfacing these days,,pawn shops are trying to double there money on what there selling as are dealers but the price hanging on an item usually isn't firm and theres always room for haggling a little ..so i'd estimate that the rifle you saw for 900 might actually sell around 750-800 and that seems about right for an average krag these days that hasn't been altered,,nice ones still are worth 1000+but it's gotta be correct and it's gotta be original!!
