Springfield .45-70 Gov't

I have a model 1873 Springfield .45-70. The only number I have been able to find (without disassembly of rifle) is "33" which is located on the underside of the Breechblock. If this is not the S/N, where is the S/N located?

serial number is just behind the trapdoor opening area. anywhere from 5 to six numbers, going from left to right.

NOT totally factual - the numbers actually run from 1 to about 567000. While, for obvious reasons, low numbers are very scarce, a few do exist. I've owned two high 4-digit rifles, though do not have any at present. For what it's worth, most numbers under around 4800 were carbines.
