Springfield 30-06

I have a 30-06 with a stamp on the end of the barrel - SA 7-29 - and a serial on the receiver - US.......380086 - I can't see the rest of the receiver serial because of the scope mount. Any ideas about the history? Could it be that it has parts from a couple springfields? I assume the barrel is a 1929 Springfield but that doesn't correspond to the receiver serial. Any ideas? BTW, I've shot about 100 hunting rounds through it in the past couple years. The barrel has some pitting on the outside but inside looks beautiful.

many 1903 springfield were refurbish before ww2 as most military rifles were after a major conflict so this could be the reason for a later barrel or it's a mixmaster someone built as a sporter,,a note to be aware of is that below serial #880000 the receivers were not heat treated and are not recommended for modern high pressure loads,,but this is a problem thats been argued many times and i personally know a guy who shoots one but he does load his own loads for it,,

As I said, I've shot many modern rounds through it but I wonder now if I've been lucky. I've never been one to desire hot loads anyway. Something to think about though.

glad to help a little ,,but like i said before it's something you think about after you here the stories,,but the guy i know will argue with you when it comes to his early psringfield and i've see many a deer fall to it's low number receiver

I JUST REIEVED A US SPRINGFIELD 30-06 #1073104 MARKED ON B. SA 3-19 WHAT IS A HOT LOAD? I HAVE 150G SHELLS? PLAN ON USEING THE GUN TO HUNT BEAR. ALSO HOW CAN YOU TELL THE AGE? OF THIS GUN?

your rifle should be fine for hunting use,,most factory ammo isn't loaded hot because of the different rifles chambered for it..the barrel dates usually give you a ballpark idea of when it may have been made unless it has been changed at sometime..there are many refrence books available and online info is pretty good as to serial numbers,,has yours been sporterized?many were turned into deer rifles after the wars ended and are still in use today

can anyone subjest an online site to find the age of the rifle from the serial numbers or other markings on the rifle?
