I have just inherited this from my mom. It's in pretty good condition, and I am guessing the S/N is located on the butt of the gun. It's K 117996. How do I determine the age of this weapon?

Dear Guest
Your K-frame Smith & Wesson revolver was manufactured in 1951. Depending on what "pretty good condition" means, this gun could have some collector interest. Any chance you might be able to post a few pictures? If so, please take them against a blue background or something other than white. Daylight pics are better than flash, also.
Thanks.

Dear BigDaddyJim
Thanks for posting the pictures. You have a very nice example of the early post-war K-38 Target Masterpiece revolver. This gun, in 1957, became the Model 14 K-38 Masterpiece. It is among the finest production target revolvers made in the 20th Century.
From the pictures, it appears that the blue is unmarked by wear or abuse. Also, everything appears to be original to the gun, although I cannot see the hammer clearly. Without seeing the gun in person, I would rate this gun as being in Excellent condition. If the grips are unmarred and the blue is as good as it looks in pictures, you have a treasure here. Any chance you have the original box for this gun? It would likely be a gold-colored box, although it could have been blue or (very rarely) maroon. If so, the value is north of $600. If not, the gun will still be valued in the $450 - $500 range.
Regards,
JP

Thank you very much for the response. I had lost the link to this forum, so I am excited to see that this gun is as special as I thought it was. Unfortunately, no box... but it is so spot on accurate and I love to shoot it.

thanks again!!

Jim

You are very welcome, Jim. We at GVB are always happy to be of assistance.
Enjoy your K-38. It really is a beautiful example of the gunmaker's art.
This particular model line is the focus of my own collection, so if you just decide you need money and want to unload it, let me know!
Regards,
JP

Would you post a couple photos of it here, on this thread?
Thanks.
