wondering if anyone knows anything about this type of smith and wesson..
I've never seen one quite like it!
On the sides it says:
On one side of the barrel it says:
Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass U.S.A.
PAT'D APR9.89 MAR27.94 MAY21.95 JUL16.95 AUG4.96
DEC.22.96 OCT.4 98 OCT. 8. 01 DEC.17.01. SEPT 2.02 JUL 7.03
On the other side of the barrel it says:
.38 S. & W. SPECIAL
U.S. SERVICE CTG '8
And up on the site block at the end of the barrel it says King pat. pen.
here are two photos..
Thanks, Terry..
P.S. I don't have the serial #..
a friend sent me these photos and was wondering what I thought it may be worth..

very good description,,but the pics would be helpful ,,try again and use the attach an image tab below ,,post them one at a time and after you post the first one just hit reply and post the second one ,,it sounds like it might be a 38 hand ejector model ,,mabey police or military model ,,but there were alot of smiths built around your patent dates and a pic would be very heplful in determing which one it is ,,

hello again,,good job with the pic,,i knew ya could do it..lol..well i'm sorry to say your friends pistol is all wrong.. it looks like a 4" victory model ,,the grips are a later model goncolla oversized target grip it should have uncheckered smooth grips that contour the frame ,,the front site is wrong also and i'd bet someone added it with the 2 pins shown on it and proably underneith the fancy site is proably the original round blade ,,the rear adjustable site is wrong and that also was proably added at some time it should most proably have just a U groove for siting,,so my thoughts on it are someones attempt to make a 4" target gun,,why someone would do this is beyond me ..lol. i'd almost bet ya that if ya take the grips off theres a hole in the bottom of the grip strap where the lanyard ring was ,,condition doesn't look the greatest either and in the condition shown id estimate it being worth between 125-150 as a parts gun,,
...if you would take the time and get rid of all the add ons it would proably cost ya more than the pistols worth in original condition and then you would still have the extra holes from adding the front and rear site,,then tack on a cleaning and refinishing job because of the repairs and filling the holes and you'd proably have 300 in repairs for a pistol worth 350 in excellent condition and that wouldn't include the initial cost of the pistol,,best thing your friend could do with it in my opinion is just shoot it till it doesn't shoot anymore and then sell it for parts or as a truck gun..sorry and your right about it being unusual!! and not like anything i've ever seen done with a smith..
