I understand the old trick of unhooking one of the springs under the grip to improve the trigger isn't highly recommended.

I need to improve the awful trigger on my (New Model) Single Six. I ordered what looked like a decent assortment of springs from Wolff since having extras and spares on hand doesn't bother me.

Should I have a gunsmith do this for me or is this something I can do myself? (I'm reasonably apt mechanically)

I guess what I'm asking is whether this is simply a matter of replacing the lawyer springs and testing for safe operation or if there are any gunsmith specific procedures and skills involved, like critical stoning of small parts and so on?

If you've done this before on your Single Six could you outline the procedure for me?

Here's a fantastic website I ran across when I was looking for the same sort of information for my Ruger Blackhawk. It specifies a Bisley, but the other Ruger revolvers aren't all that different.

According to the site (and my experience) replacing the springs and giving everything a good cleaning should be well within your capabilities, but stoning the sear/hammer parts requires the use of a special jig.

Anyway, give the site a try. He's got a whole lot of Ruger specific articles that are very well done.
