#Date: 6/27/2003 4:56 AM US #According to a website at the U of A that I found, cottontail are considered #small game, but jackrabbits are not. However, it did say that a license #(Class H) is required to take them. By take, does that mean shoot, or #remove? #Just wondering if its OK to walk around the middle of the desert and shoot #rabbits and birds.
No, it's not OK to walk around and shoot animals at random. The minute you are doing something like you are hunting! You must have a hunting license to shoot at animals, or pursue them.
Many animals are protected in one way or another or limited on how many you take, and taking means killing or capturing. Also how, when and where you take animals is regulated.
What kind of gun will you be 'walking around with'? If it is a centerfire rifle, it better not have a magazine capacity of more than 5 rounds, and those rounds better not be FMJ.
Going into the field carrying an AR15 with a 20 round mag full of FMJ (for example) is going to be a violation of several game laws. If you have a hunting license, an AR with a 5 round mag, (and no magazines in your possession of higher capacity) and the ammo is expanding or soft point you will be OK, provided you are following proper season, and not harassing game or non-game animals. You must check out hunt regulations to determine that you are allowed to hunt in certain areas at certain times, and there are some areas that are restricted to the type of firearm you can hunt with and when, as well as what types of birds or animals that you can shoot, and how many.
You do not want to 'walk around the desert' uneducated on hunting regulations.
Now I have a question. Why would you want to just pop various birds and animals? Not that I am against shooting animals, I am a hunter and enjoy eating the game that I take in the field. I have no problem with varminting, taking predators or furbearing animals, but I don't understand just shooting whatever you are lucky enough to see scamper or fly.

Do you intend to eat them? If so, help yourself. If not, the logic or lack thereof, baffles me.

# On Fri, 27 Jun 2003 11:56:56 +0000 (UTC), 'Jason Wagner' # # As long as you have a hunting license, you can take any sort of animal # that is not considered a game animal. AZGFD has a commision order for # 'Other bird and mammals'. It excludes game animals and exotic animals # (ocelot, ferret, etc.). Download the PDF from the GFD website, it is # very informative. # Arizona doesn't protect songbirds? They certainly aren't game animals...so I guess killing songbirds is ok according to your statement.
How very sad....

Must be an anti-gunner trying to stir the pot.

Guys like you make me sick. There is nothing antigun about his post. The original poster asked if it was ok to wonder around the desert shooting any birds or other animals he saw. No respectable hunter or gun owner would encourage such behaviour and people like you give all gun owners a bad rap as being fanitics.

First off, most serious gun owners are (hopefully) fanatics there, Holmes (so no offence taken) . And it's the moron gun owners who go out and buy a gun without any training and then shoot holes into everything that moves are the ones that are giving us all the 'bad rap' (using your own words).

So how do you feel about someone who would shoot Crows, Prairie Dogs, or other varmints? Bob
