# Does, anyone have any input on this new semi-auto pistol(.22) by Walther? Am # curious if they are a decent shooter? Reliable, Durable?
Just picked one up recently. I've only shot mine with American Eagle bulk .22 rounds, but w/ that brand ammo it's been unreliable as hell. I have two magazines, one of which definitely functions better than the other, but neither is 100%. I encounter at least one failure per magazine, be it a stovepipe or failure to return to battery. Occasionally the slide will lock shut without stripping a round out of the magazine, which is lovely since there's no visual indicator that a failure has occured until I drop the hammer. For what it's worth: when it shoots, it seems to shoot fine. I have large hands but still am able to handle the gun easily enough, though the safety is backwards from what i'm used to (1911 pattern), so it takes a bit of getting used to. Next time i'm out and about i'll have to test it with some other brands of ammunition to see if i can find something it's happier with, 'cause aside from the reliability issues it seems to be a nice piece - shoots well, inexpensive, cheap to shoot. Also, it comes with two choices for a backstrap, though they aren't terribly different. It also comes with two or three front sights, so while the sights dont seem to be adjustable for elevation per se, you can usually match one of the three fronts up to whatever brand of ammunition you're shooting. That's my experience anyway.
One little thing to watch out for, on mine at least - the barrel muzzle is a screw-on piece (the slots on it are cut so it can be operated with the included wrench) and after an afternoon of shooting, mine has been a turn or two loose. Not sure if it's really an issue - it hasn't fallen off or anything, and even if it did, i'm not sure that it'd make the gun dangerous in any way. Still, something to pay attention to.
The ones showing up at the local gun store have sold like hotcakes, and from what I hear most folks are happy with them, especially for the price, so if you can find one that functions reliably with your favourite brand of ammunition, you 'ought to be pleased. I like mine for a plinker, since I don't really have to worry about reliability in that sort of situation. If it jams, no big deal. Were it a defensive pistol I was seeking, i'd have to say No Thanks, but then I wouldn't be after a .22 anyhow.
As for durability, I can't really say. Only shot maybe 2000 rounds through mine - no problems yet. The bluing on the barrel stripped off disappointingly quickly, despite adequate lubrication, but it's not really a visual flaw unless the slide is locked open. Other than that, everything has held up fine. Satisfied, I guess. Never owned a plastic pistol, so we'll see.
All in all, for the money and the purpose of the gun, i'd swing for another, though i'll probably just save up a few extra bucks and get a Ruger. The P22 looks cooler to me, but the Ruger is a proven long-term performer in my book.
