I know, I know, I should have spent the $35 on ammo and passed on the Simmons. Now I'm shopping for a Burris to replace it, but I'm curious anyway.
The Simmons 4x scope I have is nice and sharp up close, say, to 30 or so yards. As I get further out, it gets blurrier and blurrier. At 100 yards, I can see the target, but its fuzzy, like I've had a few too many at the pub.
So far the thing seems to be able to keep its zero after a few trips back and forth from the range, but the blurry images is really starting to annoy me. Half the time, what with the crosshairs moving and all (parallax this is called?) it takes me a long time to actually get the thing to settle down on the target.
Anyway, is it typical for the images a scope presents to not be consistently clear through its range of magnification?

No that is not typical.
Have you played with the focus adjustment while looking at the target? That's the only way that I've ever been able to adjust it. YMMV

Hi,

Is it a fixed 4x scope? If so I doubt if there's anything to adjust, at least, not easily. On some fixed lens scopes you can remove the front trim ring and then adjust focus by screwing the front lense cell in and out. This is probably a warranty-voiding maneuver.
I suspect they made it for a .22, set the parallax for short range accordingly, and didn't pay attention to the longer range focus.
I strongly suggest sending it back to Simmons. They need to see what they're doing wrong so they can fix it or stop selling it. I know it will cost you a few bucks. Even expensive scopes go back occasionally for a tune-up (clean and refill).
#Anyway, is it typical for the images a scope presents to not be consistently #clear through its range of magnification?
No. Scopes under 9x should focus by eye, at least, they should up to some minimum range. At 4x you should be able to get everything you want.

Jason, it is after all, a $35 scope. But you may be able to take out most of that blurryness by adjusting the eye piece. There should be a lock ring just in front of the eye piece bell. Loosen that lock ring, then while viewing target at chosen distance, turn the bell (in or out) to clear up the picture. Be advised that if you turn the bell so it completely comes off, you may have a difficult time getting it back on because there is a rubber o-ring in the ID of the bell. A scope with an Adjustable Objective (front bell) would be nice, then again a scope in the $200 plus price range would really cure your problems. I have a $35 scope on a .22lr and it works just fine. But then I have a $450 scope on my best centerfire rifle. The difference while viewing the two side by side is like the difference between night and day.

For $35 you don't get a scope with focus adjustment.

That's like replacing a Yugo with a Peugeot.

So, it's effective at ranges that are better served with iron sights?

I don't understand. Is that good or bad?

No, its definetely easier to hit with the scope, although I do have see-through scope mounts on it so I can enjoy the iron sights as well. Its not that I can't see the target at 100 yards, its just that its blurry and my eyes try to focus the image. I guess I'll have to live with it until I get something better.
