I'm in the market for an older lever-action rifle. The Savage Model 99 looks good. This rifle was made in lots of sub-types. ie - Model 99A, B, CD, E, EG, E Carbine, Takedown .... etc. The sub-type will greatly change the asking price. Very confusing.

Is the sub-type marked on the rifle somewhere ? Any comments or suggestions on buying a Savage Model 99 at a fair price ? Anything to look-out for ?

Don't buy one in an obsolete caliber if you want a shooter. My 99F is marked 99F. Best thing we can all do is encourage Ruger to improve and reintroduce this great rifle, as they did the single action revolver. and single shot

As you say, the value depends on the exact model number, age and condition. In general, they are considered as 'shooters' and not very collectable. I can determine the year of manufacture with the serial number.

Calling them not collectible shows your ignorance on the subject of savage lever action rifles. There are many more shooters out there than collectibles. The above 99H is a fine example of a near new gun from the 30s.

Find a copy of Doug Murrys book on the savage 99 to answer your questions on model identification.
