I posted the question about the value of the 1895 Savage 303. I have the serial number now and it is 11.088. Patent date is 1893. Was the barrel manufactured by Marlin? What is the best way to remove surface rust from the metal on this rifle without damaging the finish? What about cleaning the wood? OR SHOULD I LEAVE EVERYTHING AS IS? THANKS

hi straitshooter, your rifle was manufactured in 1900, and in my oppinion unless you're going to show it off and are concerned with how it looks i'ld leave it alone. refinishing is only going to decrease the value. as for the barrel i'll do alittle more research and see what i can find out. check out this site also.

My rifle has a great bore and is very accurate. Can you give me an idea of the value? Most of the original finish is on the wood. The lever has a little case color. The receiver has some blue and the barrel blue looks good. It has Lyman peep, Lyman two way flip sight and Lyman Globe with pin that folds up or down. The Globe has patent dates on it. Looking through the peep and putting the pin in the center of both circles is a great sight picture. I sent off today for a factory letter. Thanks for your help.

hi straightshooter,
the value of comparable rifles i've found start at $1000 and go up from there, your firearm would warrant a professional appraisal im my honest oppinion.

Thanks Kim. Do you have anyone in my neck of the woods you would recommend to appraise my rifle? I live 40 miles west of Tupelo MS and 50 miles east of Memphis TN.

Your rifle is a 1899, not a 1895. All 1895s 4 digit S/N. The barrels for 1899s where not made by Marlin.

Value truly is based on condition. If its got rust to be removed Id bet its already worth less than 1000.00

0000 steel or bronze wool and light oil will remove surface rust and not Finnish. Old west snake oil is a fine product for the wood.

Model? Metal Condition? Wood condition? caliber? Extra holes? Better yet, a photo!
Dont ask what its worth without giving some info!!

I found out the sights on my 1889 are worth $300.00. I have removed just about all the surface rust from the barrel using 0000 steel wool and light oil without damaging the blue. Thanks for your information. Regardless of how much the rifle is worth I am going to keep it. It's a great rifle and fun to shoot.

My rifle's front sight is a Lyman #17 Globe with Patent Dates Jan. 8 1889-Feb.13 1894. The rear sight is a two way flip sight Lyman # 6 which will fold down flat so I can use the Tang Peep sight which is a Lyman # 18.

Sounds like a very nice set up.

Your Lyman sight is actually a lyman No.1 combination tang sight. If purchased from savage it was called the no.18.

The No. 6 was what Lyman recommended for use with a tang sight. Not only did it fold out of the way, but from an old add "the ivory triangle makes an excellent auxiliary sight for deep twilight" and "the crotch enables you to check up accurately the alignment of your sights"

The lyman tang sights had no locking ring for the elevation adjustment. It seems that the first thing someone wants to do when looking at your rifle is turn the ring. If everything is lined up, you can use the v notch or "crotch" to quickly re adjust your tang sight to zero or to re zero if you made a adjustment in the field for a long shot.

Do you have any photos to post, always like to see a nice looking 99!
