questions assume using nitric acid with dissolved iron at room temp. Question 1. Is it 'bluing' or 'blueing' ?? Question 2. How essential is the rust time ?? Question 3. How about steel wool? Okay for buffing off the ash?? Question 4. Will 'some' tap water work okay, how do we know if it's a bad idea to use the local tap water?? Symptom??

Dunlap's book on gunsmithing (Stackpole Publ. Co.) discusses all this in good detail. I got my copy at Border's Bookstore.

Time to read a book or two; Dunlap's 'Gunsmithing' is a good place to start.

One trick to keeping your degreased steel wool from rusting is to hot blue it.
