Hey guys,
I'm new here and I am excited about learning a lot on this newgroup. Anywho, after a lifetime of pellet guns and paintball, I have decided to buy a rimfire rifle to get started (I'm 20, in Canada). I have looked through many and it has basically come down to either the Ruger 10/22 or the Remington M597 SS. I like them both, but personaly I prefer the Remington. It just looks better to me and I like it how it uses a normal box magazine instead of some random rotational feed thing.
Anywho, I was wondering if you gentlemen would be so kind as to give me your recommendations. I don't mind opinion, but the closer to fact, the better =)

You cannot go wrong with either one. So if you like the Remington go for it.
Gun choice is a very personal matter. What is most important is to buy quality.

Remember that the 10/22 is easily configured into whatever you want - as the aftermarket carries so many swap-out parts and swapping them is so easy. From stocks to trigger groups to barrels, you can find aftermarket ones for 10/22s in droves - but not for the 597 - and you can get a very-nice custom rifle cheap with the 10/22; <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href='http://www.alamanceind.com/newfol~5/nation.html'>

Hey Kip,
I looked at both and ended up with the Ruger. I went with the ruger as there are so many upgrade aftermarket kits you can get, including gunsmithing guides or videos. Both have very heavy triggers right out of the box. I suspect, the Remington is more accurate as it has a better barrel to receiver design, as I understand it...
Good luck!

I've heard that the M597 is a good gun, but the 10/22 is an icon in the semi auto .22 market. Mine is 12 years old and I absolutely love it. It's reliable, fun to shoot, and so easy to customize. The list of aftermarket parts is staggering. Heavy barrels, stocks, magazines, sights, etc. You name it and you can get it for a 10/22. Anyway, I'm sure they'll both work just fine, but I think the 10/22 will get many more votes.

My brother has the Remington and it's a pretty nice gun. His biggest (only) complaint is the lack of available 'stuff'. 10/22's have gobs of accessories available that Remingtons just don't have. How much of that stuff is legal/available in Canada I don't have a clue. Also there are supposedly a lot of people who complain about the plastic magazines for the Remington, which are not as good as some metal replacements you can find. He hasn't had any trouble with his though - at least nothing he can positively trace to the magazine. Accuracy wise I think it would qualify as 'pretty good' (sorry, it's not a target gun so we don't keep records), but I don't think the 10/22 is any better.

There are about a zillion after market parts for the Ruger 10/22. Match barrels, stocks, magazines, bi-pods, triggers, etc...
I have a Ruger 10/22. Great gun.

The Ruger is better than the Remington. That rotary magazine is one of the most reliable feeding devices ever made.

Well, with the Ruger you'll have a TON of aftermarket accessories to play with (EVERYTHING on the gun has an aftermarket upgrade counterpart. if you so wished a complete non-Rugwr 10/22 could be assembled from the upgrade parts). The rotational mage I find very cool (doesn't protrude from the gun and keeps the contour smooth), but on mine, accuracy hasn't been great and I've had serious feeding problems. At 35 yards it shoots about 3' groups, and quite often the brass from one round won't clear the receiver before the bolt slams back on it, causing a jam. I haven't had any experience with the Remington, but I've used a Lakefield (Model 64b) that was more accurate and reliable (didn't feel quite as solid though). It's your call, but I'm personally gonna go for something different for my next .22LR purchase.

What do you mean by 'RANDOM'? Anyone who shoots the Ruger 10/22 will tell you that the factory 10 round rotary clips is the most reliable magazine for the rifle. I place less reliance on single stack 22 magazines. And I trust them less when their capacity goes over 10 rounds. I have no experiance with a double stacked 22 magazines but that sounds like a lesser of a reliable design.
