Had a few guys ask me to write about reloading so I am. Once you start you will be hooked for life. When you take your first box you made to the range youll know what Im talking about.Lets get started. Ill start with rifle cartridge reloading. I would get a kit with a RCBS Rockcrusher in it or a Lyman Orange crusher or a Redding Big Boss they all are for 7/8-14 dies. All are strong well made single stage presses.
Other eguipt. you need { may be in your kit.} #1 a good powder scale get a single beam like a Redding #2 master scale.#2 a powder measure a good one is a Redding.#3 powder trickler #4 a good venier with a dial. #5 loading trays. #6 a case trimmer. #8 a primer pocket cleaning tool #9 a primer pocket uniformer tool #10 a flash hole deburring tool #11 a mouth deburring tool #12 shell holder for the correct cartridge #13 a tumbler or the vibrating type #14 a bullet comparator to go on your venier for measuring #15 a OAL measuring tool #16 a funnel # 17 a neck cleaning brush I think I got it all OH I almost forgot a pocket of money. Now you have to get your dies for the caliber your reloading RCBS and Lyman make good ones but Redding the best {note youll pay more for Redding} there are a few others that are good too like Forster dies. OK what happens is when you shot your cartridge in your rifle the brass expanded and is now out of size and has to be resized again so yes thats step one. First you have to clean up your brass put them in your tumbler run them till ther nice and shinny, dont do too many at a time depending on the size of the tumbler.Set up the dies in the press according to the die instuctions. Lube your brass with case lube so they wont get stuck in the press insert the brass run a stoke also I might add that the spent primer will be removed in this process too. Clean the brass with a towel then run them all thru the tumbler again for a few hours to clean thr lube off. They probably grew in length some so now use your venier anmeasure ,look up in your book to get the trim length ,set up your trimmer and trim to the right size. Now deburr the mouth ,clean and uniform the pocket. use your flash hole deburring tool deburr the flash hole because when they were made they stamped the hole and left a burr there which can cause a ununiformed ignition. Next step will be putting a new primer in ,you can do this with your press. Using your scale weigh up your powder Be carefull here USE ONLY what your listed load states ,start on the starting loads work your way up. Now that you have your cases charged its time for seating your bullets .follow the directions from your dies { note I use a AOL gauge to measure how far to seat my bullet In thats where the bullet comparator comes in ,put it on your venier and you can measure how far to set your bullet in .This will give you an accurate measurment with using it in conjuntion with your AOL gauge. I set my bullets 20 thousands off the lands. Always keep track of how much powder you loaded keep track of oal { over all length} the powder charge ect. keep a log. See how your loads did ,try a differant bullet next time, try differant loads thats why your reloading to get the most accurate results that you cant get with factory cartridges. I must add that compatition shooting we go much farther I mean we use differant type of dies that you need a arbor press, cases are sorted out and weighed for uniformity case neck are turned bullets weighed we use a neck micrometer and more but thats for highly accurate cartridges for those who care about grouping so tight it looks like a single hole. These steps I did will give you accurate results. I forgot to mention your powder measure is for when you want a powder charge lets say 37 grains so you dont have to measure every one, once your measure is set correct you just flip the lever and a accurate load is droped in your brass saves a lot of time but still check every few to be safe. I recomend reading first about reloading , Dont drink beer when reloading and dont smoke need I say this. GOOD SHOOTING P.S. for getting the best equipment and for picking up tips get a Sinclair International catalog its free they have the best equit.
