When I first bought the rifle about 6 weeks ago, I noticed that it had a terrible tendency to jam. What would happen, is that the spent cases would wedge the bolt open, preventing the action from feeding another round. I brought this concern to this NG and many people said that the rifle had to be 'broken in', and others said to try ammunition with a 'higher energy'. I believe that I have exhausted both of those efforts, as I probably have about 600 rounds through the rifle by now, and switching to CCI Velocitors has made little to no difference. I believe the problem now is more of a mechanical issue with the gun. This constant jamming happens quite frequently and has really taken away from the enjoyment of shooting it. If anyone has any information about this rifle in particular, or just general advise, it would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, I don't want to hear any comments such as 'You should have bought a 10/22'. I like the Remington just fine, and it would suit my needs quite adequately if not for the issue of it jamming.

Hi Joe,

Hmm, you might need one of the newer extractors Remington has put out for
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ and ask your questions on the Remington forum over there (more knowledgeable 597 people there). I unfortunately can't help you, I have an older model 597 that performs flawlessly for me.

I'm just going to throw this out because I don't own a 597 or know what the magazine looks like, but I've had problems with their plastic magazines going back to a mid 70s Mohawk 10c (cheaper Nylon 77 really) and a 541. Both problems due to the fact that the spring in them is too stiff. Cutting a coil off the bottom gave it more than enough compression to feed reliably but not enough to violently force rounds up too early and interfere with ejection of the spent case. The 10c was a constant stovepiper until I tried

I have a 597 with the same problem. I think it's just a faulty design. It's not up to the same standards as other Remingtons.

Check to see if you have the older style ejector, it's flat. The new style is offset. If you have the old style call remington, they'll send you a new one. Another thing to check is the setscrews that hold the bolt guiderails in place. They are ALWAYS too tight, back them off and reset them with NO MORE THAN FINGER PRESSURE. No torque at all, just so they touch the rails, otherwise the rails will bow and the bolt will not glide back and forth. Come on over to RimFireCentral ... lots of info for all .22s and our own Remington section.
