A few of you have stated that it would be a good idea to start out with a single stage press, rather than a progressive press, to reduce the complexity of the process during the learning process. Isn't it possible to only use a single stage of a progressive press during the learning process?

Specifically, If I get the AT 500 starter kit, would I have to be working on several cartridges at the same time? ...or couldn't I simply work on one cartridge at a time during the learning process, finishing each cartridge before starting the next?

regards,

You probably could. I like my Lee turret, and to use it as you describe I simply remove the auto indexer. The basic rules are pay attention, and let the machine do as much as possible (to reduce human errors).

# Isn't it possible # to only use a single stage of a progressive press # during the learning process? # # ...or couldn't I simply work on one cartridge at # a time during the learning process, finishing each # cartridge before starting the next? # The answer to both of your questions is yes.

I've been shooting bottle neck rifle cartridges most lately. Since I am a bit querky, I like to use a hammer and a punch to remove the primer and then tumble the brass. Then I resize/expand, and then measure/trim. Then prime with Lee prime all tool. Then fill powder, place head and seat/crimp. Each cartridge goes into and out of the the old 550 twice. If I only reloaded bottle neck rifle cartridges, I would have never bought the Dillon. Since it's bolted to the bench, I tend to use it for most jobs.

If someone is just starting out, and doesn't know if they will really like reloading, I think a cheap Lee single stage press is just the right introduction. Much less intimidation factor. (But I aint giving up my Dillon though!)

I have the Dillon 550b and the way it is set up, it is easy to use it as a single stage press. I have done this when wanting to deprime, then tumble , hand prime, load some weighed rifle powder (never can get the IMR stick powder to measuer very well in several types of measuers I have used )and then seat the bullet.

The press is a manual indexing type and has some brass pins that can be pulled to let you insert or remove the case at any step.
