Hello! I am wanting to get back into the gun hobby, and after being away for many years in need to re learn alot! Anyway, I found at a gun show some Russion and Yugoslovian 7.62x39 assualt rifles. They are cheap, ammo is pretty cheap, and look to be a fun gun to go out and shoot with. I would be mainly shooting at targets, close rang, nothing too far away. I also thought, if a wide spread disaster hit, it could also serve as a good protection weapon to ward off looters. Any thoughts good or bad? I also found a Hi-Point 9mm Carbine that is cheap also. I must add that I need something that does not have a lot of kick to it, so as my wife could use it. Thanks in advance!

None of these are particularly accurate rifles, so target shooting has limits if small group sizes/small targets become important. They are good for self defense. Recoil is low.
If you do a lot of target shooting you might find yourself really wanting to do some _accurate_ shooting and for that an additional ..22LR is hard to beat and is very low in cost. Also good to have at the range to shoot while the larger caliber rifle is cooling.

The SKS in 7.62x39 is a great weapon. Ammo is readily available as you have noted and not expensive. The Russian and Yugoslovian rifles are well made and have a lot of bang for the buck. I'd vote for that over the 9mm carbine.

If the Russian is REALLY a Russian it's the 'grail' for assault type rifles worth close to $400 if it's in prime condition. The Hi-point IS CHEAP, IMHO doesn't hold a candle to Mr. K's design.
PLEASE don't call a semi-auto an assault rifle! To be an assault weapon it would have to be FULLY AUTOMATIC!! Don't hand the 'hoplophobics' more ammo. Ted

I can shoot squirrels all day long with my 9mm carbine.

the hi point has tremendious stinging recoil
i have fired these and they shouldnt have the stinging recoil they have its a weird sharp slap kind of like one of those spring loaded punches
i would get the sks and a buttpad for it
you will appreciate the power of the cartridge compared to the 9mm if you have a nice place to shoot outdoors

It's not an 'assault weapon', it's a HOMELAND DEFENSE WEAPON!
