Hi All.

Been lurking around this group for a few months now and have read and learned allot of great things here. Even posted a few times. Now the long awaited day has finally come that I have my CCL and I am open to any advise that this wise group has to offer. I am a law abiding Texas resident and wish to remain that way. Any hints/advise on carry techniques, do's and don'ts, and advise in general would be most appreciated and heavily considered.

Also, if there is anyone in the Lubbock area here, I would be interested to know if you have seen any 30.06 signs anywhere. I haven't noticed any.

TIA

Well first decide on what method of carry works for you. Most folks wear a IWB or belt design holster. Your dress is important as well. Tight clothing will impede your draw or imprint the outline of the gun. Buy pants a waist size or two bigger to carry an IWB holster. A long untucked T-shirt or polo works well in the summer when things are to hot for a coat or sweater. Buy a quality holster. A cheap gun show special wont last long. The holster should retain the gun during normal activity with out falling out. Practice your draw from holster at the range to work on speed. Remember not to leave the weapon visible to others. Don't sit in the Burger King with your Glock showing. It tends to upset people! Be very very careful during police trafic stops!!!!!! Keep hands on the wheel and have ID out before they reach the car! Remember the guy who got shot 40 times in NY pulling a wallet! Don't wind up as a 'mistake.' Never Draw unless the situation is dire. This is deadly force, and you must have some justification to use it. Kids putting toilet paper on the front lawn at Halloween or a guy in bar calling you a FAG don't cut it...... We had a incident about 2 years back with two CCL's getting into a shoot out over shoveling snow in a parking space for example. Keep the gun in the car if you are going to a school, bank,or Goverment bldg. The reasons should be obvious...........

Probably because the bank has a 30-06 sign prominantly displayed on the entrance. Even a shoe store that displays the legitimate 30-06 sign can prohibit a firearm on/in the premisses. It's the private property thing. Disobey the sign and you're trespassing. Bill Van Houten (USA Ret)

Thermopylae had it's messenger of defeat, COME AND GET THEM ! The Alamo had none.

I haven't noticed any. # As with many engineering problems, there are balances to be struck. Your gun, carry method and clothing have to work together. I focused on the gun, because I could shoot it better than any other suitable gun I owned. And so I made the other two elements revolve around the gun. Meaning I had to find a carry method and clothing that worked for that gun. If style of dress is what you're locking into, you'll have to find a carry method and gun that work with how you dress. As a new CHL, you probably aren't locked into a carry method; but if you are, your clothing and gun would have to be chosen accordingly.

My primary carry gun is a full-sized 1911-pattern .45ACP. My style of dress had to change drastcally to accomodate this choice. Texas CHL law requires the gun be concealed. When I can't dress in a way that allows concealing it, I carry a different gun. That's very infrequent.

Local gov'ts in Texas, as of 2003/09/01, are forbidden to prohibit CHL carry (only a very few appear to do so now). Courtrooms and offices of courts are presently prohibitted; as of 2003/09/01 that may extend to the entire courthouse. And I've yet to see a bank that prohibits CHL carry.

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about Texas statutes:

Not a bank, but Community Credit Union www.communitycu.org prohibits concealed carry aith a legal sign. Additionally, they prohibit spouses and other family members from carrying - even when at he drive up window!

It's strange, when we first moved to Austin people warned me how anti-gun Austin was ... 'San Francisco on the Colorado'. But the _only_ two 30.06 signs I've seen here have been either mandated by statute (a nursing home) or a gov't building. The gov't building sign was non-compliant in the first place and was soon 1/2 covered with another sign anyway. As of 09/01, that sign has to come down.

Posting a financial institution sounds just plain stupid to me. Especially a credit union. The CU my brother-in-law works at is run on a shoe-string. I'm pretty sure they don't employ any guards. So posting just says 'Robber Saefty Zone', in two languages, contrasting block letters at least an inch high on a sign at least 6sq. ft.
