I inherited a 1912 16 gauge Winchester shotgun. There is a bump about 12 inches down from the choke. Is that part of the rifle or is there something wrong with it? Also, does any one have any pointers on how to go about cleaning and oiling it?

Thanks,
Jon

hello,,sorry to have to telll you that it sounds like you have some problems with the barrel on your md 12..if the "bump" is in then a good gunsmith may be able to pop it out,,but if it feels like a bulge out then you may need a new barrel,,my advice to you would be to have a good gunsmith take a look at it and see what he tells you,,as for cleaning ,,basic cleaning is about all you should do ,,a complete teardaown should be left to someone thats knowledgable with md 12's.. sometimes the forarm is a real bear to get off without cracking it,,and unless you know how to reassemble it you may have more problems than you want or need,,so let a gunsmith at a shop in your aera look it over and see what he says needs to be done,, if you do need a barrel there out there and i'd say your looking at between 100-200 for a good used one ..but it's not something that is an easy find sometimes ,,and 16ga might be tough,,do a search online for winchester md 12 16ga barrel and see wht ya can find ,,i'm sure there are sites out there also that will help with dissasembly if you look around ,,

hey if your looking for another barrel try springfield sporters ,,there in pa and there parts can't be beat for quality,,and will proably be the cheapest ,,they have parts for alot of military rifles and i recommend them to anyone looking for good military parts,,heres there site http://www.ssporters.com/Parts%20Listing%20Page.htm give them a call if you don't see what ya want sometimes they don't have all the parts listed,,if ya don't find one i might know a guy locally that might have one ,,shouldn't be a high priced item..
