I believe the M-21 combination is still used by the Army. Also keep in mind the events that actually transpired in Somalia took place 10 years ago.

the only comment i have about that movie, if I or anyone here spent 1/2 a hour with the ak-47 toting bad guys explaining fundamental shooting skills it would have been a 20 minute movie

I believe it was supposed to be a sniper rifle of the designation M-21, which is either in issue or is at least available.

The special ops guys tend to operate in areas without artillery or other heavy weapon coverage. This puts a premium on the power of the cartridge they shoot, since they cannot depend on backup from heavier weapons.

The 5.56mm runs low on gas after about 300 meters, the 7.62 is good out to at least 800 meters.

Yes. The M14 is still out there in US inventory. I think it is still the 'issue' rifle of the US Navy(Sea Bees, mostly). And the 'D' boys have alot of leeway in what they carry, so I have heard! And that Medal Of Honor Winner was a Delta Force Sniper. If you read the book, Blackhawk Down, there is a paragraph where a Delta trooper is swearing at his M-4 and the new stabilized ammo that passes through the target like an ice pick, wishing he had an M14. The same gentleman used his Wilson 1911 .45 to good effect later. Some units do grant leeway with weapons. One gent in the Marines 20 some odd years ago had a Colt 3X scope atop his M16. I got to carry my HK91A3 on three occassions(mainly because My CO or an Officer wanted to shoot it!). My personal .45 auto was always in my ALICE pack when we went on Admin Stand Down(For a Rapid Deployment Alert or Drill). And I had at least a 10 round pack of .223 soft point in my pack when we went into the field, just in case...though my reasoning was food more than battle. I heard from one Veteran that the 82nd Airborne allowed some individual weapontry to be carried But mostly, it is M16's, M-4's, SAW's and Beretta M-9's that are in acceptable use in the current military. All with ball ammo! I believe a common grunt with an M16E2 could probably get away with some sort of red dot sight on his rifle, and a Surefire under the barrel could be very useful in some situations. And though I vastly prefer a .45 auto, I think if I were in now some sort of micro 9m/m mini gun would find its way about my person too!! Ooops!! DVC, Jercamp45
