I have a Winchester Model 94 30/30 that I was wondering what year it was made and what it is worth. The serial number is 3973505.

Horntoad,
Your rifle was born in 1974. So it is fairly new. Assuming it is in very good condition it should be valued $400.

Thank You for your reply.
This was my dad's gun and needs cleaning badly. Any suggestions on how to remove rust other than the rust it’s in good condition. Would you know of a web-site that would show the breakdown so I could give it a good cleaning. I found Winchesters model 94 manual but it doesn't show any break-down for cleaning just bore and wrapping or oiling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Cliff

Cliff,
Uh Oh!! The "R" word, rust. You might cut that value in half. Rust means the bluing is thin or gone in spots and that is bad news for value.
But it was your father's rifle and that is where it derives most of its value from. I have never had to clean rust from my rifles. But I do know some collectors who will use gun oil and VERY FINE steel wool AND RUB VERY VERY LIGHTLY!!!! AND SLOWLY!!! They claim good luck with the process. Keep a light coat of oil on it afterwards.
Unless the chamber looks real dirty or rusted I wouldn't mess with taking it apart. If bad take it to a gunsmith for an overhaul. A spray lubricant, not WD 40, can be sprayed lightly into the camber/receiver to keep it lubricated. A few patches with Hoppes solvent through the bore followed by dry and then oiled patches should put it in fine shape.
Have fun

Cliff,
My father is retired Full Colonoel US Army.
Can't clean your weapon enough.
Go slow and easy and it should clean up nicely.
