Hello,

I am trying to correctly date an 1894 that I have. Serial number is 172795. Can someone help me figure out when it was made?

Thanks.

According to the serial number chart for Winchester Model 1894 rifles, your rifle was made in 1898.

That's what the charts all say - actually most of the ones I've seen say 1899. I asked a guy at the Cody, WY museum and he said 1903. I'm very confused...

If you want to correctly date the rifle start with flowers. Just kidding.

The 1898 date is "correct". But may not be the absolute date. You could check with the Codi Firearms Museum and have the serial number run. That would give the best answer. I have seen 2 to 5 year differences.

Tom,

That is because "all the charts" are for the most part taken from a book by George Madis in which he extrapolated the dates ove wide ranges. Certainly not very accurate. The Cody date is drawn from the actual hand ledgers from the factory. As I said the dates can be off by years.
