I recently inherited a japanese made Liberty Chief .38 Spec. 6 shot 2 inch. I am not familiar with this brand but it appears to be a fairly substantially built little snubby. The gun looks like a combination of S&W and Colt with a little Charter Arms thrown in for good measure. This piece is in almost brand new condition and I was wondering if there would be a problem using any of the .38 Spec. various plus P loads in it. Thanks for any information any of you might have on this.

Well since the Japanese citizens can't be trusted to own guns, the least they can do is to try to run S&W and Ruger out of business.

Japan, the most successful communist nation in the world. (But you would never know it from looking at the Japanese business reports).

Greg, why don't you ask the manufacturer?

I believe they're still making guns for Browning, FN and Weatherby.

Well yes they are C. A. and (keep this under your hat) the rumor is they may attack the United States!

Like you, I was not aware this gun even existed. While I've never handled or even seen one in person, I did read a bit about this snubby in my recently-acquired copy of Jane's Guns. Interesting that the Japanese would put 'Liberty' in the name of a tool issued to those in charge of keeping the populace disarmed and helpless, no? Why not just take it in to a gunsmith and have the little thing inspected thoroughly. If it's as similar to the Colt/S&W/Charter Arms pieces as it appears, perhaps a satisfactory assessment of its quality can be gained through comparison.

That is good advise, I will do that. I did take it to the range and ran some standard horespower loads through it with no apparent problem. The action certainly leaves something to be desired however. At any rate thank for your response.

Best, Greg

Yes they are still in business. I Googled the company name and actually found a website for the factory and as you stated they do make shotguns and rifles for some major American companies. I will attempt to contact them and thanks for your advise.

They've been making guns since the 1500s, at least.

If I remember correctly, most of the Browning/Winchester repros such as the Model 95 and the low wall are made in Japan. Beautiful
