Maryland Bill - Guns For Woman With Protective Orders

The Washington Times Tara’s Two Cents blog posted an article a few days ago about a bill that  has been introduced in Maryland  to allow women who receive protection orders to carry firearms.

I was surprised to find that the domestic violence advocates don’t support this bill claiming that the gun could be used against the women. In a way, I suppose, that is true - but at least it offers her some form of empowerment that she didn’t have before, and maybe, in some cases, she  has a fair chance of scaring of her attacker.

As the Conservative Scalawag implies - restraining orders aren’t much protection without a gun.

best bumper sticker i ever saw read “i have PMS and a gun”..any questions? lol..nope!!..lol..but on the subject at hand..i agree that a woman needs to defend herself..but in some cases i beleive the woman would be at risk of the attacker possibly turning it on her..most women i know don’t even want to touch a gun of any kind let alone shoot someone with it..when it comes down to actually pulling the trigger against someone it’s a very tough dission to make ,,and as they say if you pull it out ya better be ready to use it..many women and men carry pistols and are ready to use them.. but every situation cannot be perdicted to go the way it’s suppose to and without proper training and mindset can be disastorus,,i know men that because they carry they think there invincable and don’t look sideways at me wrong or i’ll shoot ya …criminals don’t have anything to loose and everything to gain and most of the time they will be carring a gun to do there dirty work just because of the fear factor a gun brings to people as soon as they see one ..from either side of the barrel,,but i don’t think someone should carry a gun if they can’t pull the trigger or there having a bad day..in this case 1+1=-1

I agree. In theory it seems obvious but in actuality, being atact can be a mummifying experience, and unless you are really comfortable with a gun, and have shot it often at a practice range - it could potentially bring more harm than good.

You all miss the point. What about Man who seek protective orders should they be allowed to carry guns? You cannot treat one sex better than the other and as we know, protective orders have been on the rise…what does that tell you about the mortality rate of Maryland if this bill was to pass? How many lives would be ruined as a result of this?
  • Nancy responded:
It has nothing to do with the sex of the person with the protective order, it has to do with what would happen if worst came to worst.
  • Mickey Mouse responded:
Perhaps it has nothing to do with the sex but if I read it correctly, it was to allow, women to carry guns. It said nothing about man here. While we are at it, statistics do confirm that most protective orders are sought out by women and not man. It is unfortunate, a law that was designed to protect, those who are abused would be misused as a basis for divorce. You even have to agree that protective order abuse has gotten out of hand.
