hello ,,your marlin was made between 1897 -1917 and 125,000 were produced in those years,,this is the first lever action 22 and was the starting ground for the very popular md 39 lever action 22 which was introduced in 1922,,
value for a 97 in fair condition would be 350-400,,in good condition it would be 500-650,,determining condition is very hard to do,,especially on older guns ,,what might look fair to you might be good -very good to a collector and could be the difference of 100's of dollars ,,collectors look for the original finishes or these old rifles and will want an original worn finish over something that looks TOO new,,wood is expected to have been used but solid with no cracks or major peices missing ,,metal on a gun as old as your should proably have a brown or patina look overall,,the receiver on yours should have signs of case coloring ,( blues ,,purples ,,yellows )as long as it's not a rust bucket you may have a good collectors item and i'd take it to a gunshow and see if you can find a marlin collector to evaluate it better,,or mabey post a pic here and let us look at it,,as long as it's functional it should still have collectors intrest,,
